Want to operate a small food business from your home kitchen in Alameda County? Here’s what you need to know to get a Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) permit:
- Download the Application/SOP: You’ll need this form to apply. You can find it here: MEHKO Application/SOP (opens in a new tab).
- Submit Your Application & Fee: Mail or walk-in your completed application and pay the $696.00 permit fee to:Alameda County Department of Environmental Health (ACDEH)
1131 Harbor Bay Parkway, Alameda, CA 94502- Your application will not be processed until payment is received.
- Pass Inspection: Once your application is approved, you’ll schedule an inspection of your home kitchen.
- Food Safety Manager Certification: You, as the permit holder, must pass an approved food safety manager course. Any other individuals involved in food preparation or service must obtain a food handler card.

Key MEHKO Facts:
- You can only prepare and serve food the same day.
- Meals per day limit is 30. Individual meals per week limit is 60.
- Your total annual gross sales cannot exceed $50,000.
- You are limited to one full-time equivalent employee. (Not including household members)
- You can advertise your business online.
- You cannot sell at farmers markets, community events, or other mobile food facilities.
- No signs are allowed at your residence.
